Terms to Learn Clans: groups based on family ties Chieftan: military leader Wodan: German's chief god; god of war, poetry, learning, magic Thor: god of thunder, god of war Blood Feuds: quarrels where the families of the original fighters seek revenge Oath-helpers: swore that the accused was telling the truth Ordeal: severe trial to determine guilt or innocence Wergeld: fine as punishment Hamlets.-German tribes lived in villages called hamlets.The villages were surrounded by farmland and pastures. Houses.-Homes were long thatcheded-roof huts.The family lived in one end and the animals lived in the other end in stalls.The body heat of the animals helped warm the hut.Wooden tables and benches were the only furniture.Rich villagers added wall hangings and carpets. Description.-They are descibed as men of giant stature, with fair skin, blue eyes, and long, yellow hair.Many of them were tall and broad-shouldered.Many of them were lean and even gaunt.Their skin pulled taut over muscles and bone from sheer hunger. For the bold and hardy life to which their sons were bred.For the deep respect which they paid to their women.For their faithful conduct and their kindness to strangers .Farming.-Germans made their living herding cattle.the soil was hard clay.Germans grew barley, rye, wheat, beans, and peas.Most of the farm work was done by women, children, and slaves.Women also cooked, spun wool, and wove cloth on upright looms. Occupations.-Milling, baking, brewing, carpentry, lapidary, farming, trapping, hunting, Trade.-Germans traded cattle for Roman glass vessels, table articles, and jewelry.

Land of the VikingsDuring the 900s, the Vikings attacked the Anglo-Saxons in England. The tall, fair-skinned Vikings came from Scandinavia. They were brutal fighters and robbers. They spread fear and destruction as they captured parts of France and Britain. They opened new trade routes, ruled cities in Russia, set up colonies in the North Atlantic, and explored North America. Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are Viking founded kingdoms. The LandThe Viking homeland was Scandinavia.It was a land of forests and long, rugged coastlines.Jutland had natural harbors, and it was suitable for farming.The rest of Scandinavia was rocky and had a short growing season.People turned to the sea to make a living. ShipsViking ships were large and well suited for long voyages.They were shallow enough to navigate rivers.16 oars were on each side.Shields were placed on the sides of the ships.he bows were carved in the shape of a dragon's head.Sails were square and red and yellow in color.An awning in the front protected sailors from bad weather. Ship LifeThey slept in leather sleeping bags.They cooked in bronze pots.Vikings plotted their course by the position of stars. TradeThey fished and traded in the North Atlantic.Most of their traveling was in the spring after fields were planted.In the winter they repaired boats and weapons.Viking traders carried fish, furs, hides, and slaves to western Europe and the Mediterranean.They brought back silk, wine, wheat, and silver. TownsTrade led to the growth of market towns.Two main streets ran along the edge of the water.Buyers and sellers set up booths.Towns were protected by mounds of earth surrounded by wooden walls with towers. VillagesMost Vikings lived in villages.Houses were made of logs or boards.Slanted roofs were made of wood covered by sod.Carved dragons decorated the roofs.The houses had a small porch help up by carved pillars.
